Sareth Svay

Svay Sareth (b. 1972, Battambang; lives in Siem Reap) is a Cambodian contemporary artist working primarily in performance and sculpture.

He received his Diplôme National Supérieur d’Études des Arts Plastiques from the University of Caen in 2009.

Sareth has exhibited widely on the international stage, including at the Asia Pacific Triennial, Biennale of Sydney, Gwangju Biennale, and Singapore Biennale. In 2016, he was awarded the Prudential Eye Award.

He is the founder of SM Art Center and a co-founder of Phare Ponleu Selpak, an influential arts organization in Cambodia.

Drawing from his personal history as a genocide survivor and refugee, Sareth’s work explores themes of memory, authority, endurance, and survival. His practice often reflects on historical trauma and social hierarchies through physical and symbolic acts.

Notable works include Mon Boulet (2011), as well as Ruins, Stake, and Eat, which embody recurring themes of resilience and the burden of history.
